Mas = Friend.
Masukan - Methods used to successively enter into an opponents space. There are various methods. They can be very similar to Lankah, Jurus etc, the difference is their whole intention to gain a safe entry.
Masukan Kaki = Term used to differentiate between leg entries and Masukan Tangan (hand entries) in Combat Silat.
Masukan Tangan = Hand entries of Combat Silat.
Masukan Siku - Elbow Entries. Limb Destructions using the elbow so as to be able to safely enter.
Masukan Lutut - Knee Entries. As for Elbow Entries but using the knee
Mati = Dead. Used to describe the end of a technique or lock in silat.
Mekar = Rising.
Melangkah = The consideration of how to step.
Memulai! - Begin!
Merah = Red.
Minangkabau = The most prominent people group of West Sumatra who are known for the low fighting styles.
Monyet = Monkey. Pamonyet is one of our base systems.
Murid = disciple
Murid Mati = Dead student. A method of training where the training partner does not resist. One part of the statue drill.
Naga = Dragon
Narima – Accept. To accept that training must be step by step. To understand that we are only human. Accepting of social standing in Javanese culture.
Nrimo – Not to envy others success and each persons acceptance of fate.

Pasang = The name given to welcoming postures
Peci/Songkat = The name for the velvet hat that is worn by silat practitioners.

Pendekar
= A hero or great master of silat.
Penjabakan - Trapping. This is designed to render the opponent immobile just long enough for you to finish them.

Pentjak/Pencak
= The "artistic" side of silat. Beauty. See also Seni.
Perhatian = attention
Persaudaraan - Brotherhood
Pertukaran - To exchange. In a silat context it means to exchange position relative to your opponent. For example, changing from inside to outside, left to right , above to below etc.
Pesilat = Person who practices silat.
Picut = Flick.
Pijak Baru = Light step. Seeing with your feet in essence.
Pisau = Any type of straight blade Knife.
Pukul = To beat or hit.
Pukulan Terus = Straight Punch.
Pukulan = striking
Pukulan Tukul = Hammer Fist
Pukulan Macan tutul = Panther Fist
Puter Kepala = Head turning throw.
Puter Garis Setengah - Spin the centre axis
Putih = White
Rahsia = Secret.
Raja = A King.
Rasa = Feeling, emotion.
Rencong = A type of knife used by the Aceh people of Sumatra which is sometimes held between the toes.
Rendah - Low
Rukun – Harmony. Within the family, village, community, World
Rukun Agawe Santoso – Harmony makes us strong.
Sabar – To be patient, to control emotions.

Sangsot – Palm up strike from a low position with a short hand. Basically an upper cut (sort of).
Sapu
= Front sweep.
Sarong = A piece of fabric, usually batik cloth, that is worn around the waist or around the shoulder. It can be one tube shaped piece of fabric that is woven or a single piece of flat cloth. Can be used as a weapon but more commonly used as part of the Indonesian dress for both male and female. Related to Islamic prayer times and the need to be covered to the ankles during prayers.
Sasaran = Training area.

= General greeting. Actually means safe.
Selamat Datang = Greeting: Welcome.
Selamat Jalan = Greeting: Goodbye.

Selamat Pada Tua – Peace be upon you (said to a group of people)
Selosar - Groin kick. This differs from Sepak Blakok Didalam in that it is a snap kick designed to scoop upward so that it can move the sarong.
Sembah - Ritual Greeting Posture. Usually done at the beginning of Jurus/Lankah etc.
Sembilan = Nine.
Sempai Hati = Having the heart to do something.
Sempok = A crossing step where the lead leg steps behind the rear leg, often into a sila position.
Seni = Art or skill.
Senjata = Weapons.
Sepak Kadam = Kick with sole of foot.
Sepok = To kick.
Sepok Blakok Didalam - Inside crane kick (Tandangan Bayang), using the top of the foot to kick the groin. Uses a bent leg to kick, with no snap, it just raises up. (One of the shadow kick of the system). Is used on Lankah Tiga to great effect.
Sepok Bundar Lompat = Jumping Crescent Kick.
Sepok Cakeng = Roundhouse kick.
Sepok Depan = Front Kick.
Sepok Depan Orang Dua = Two man drill for front kick where one kicks and the other slaps the kick down then immediately kicks.
Sepok (di) Belakang – Back kick
Sepok (di) Bawah – Low kick aimed at supporting leg when
Sepok Kaki Rusuk = Edge of foot kick.
Sepok Sodok = Shovel kick.
Sepok Tundik = Intercepting kick.

– To hit a limb upwards to expose another target or prevent a counter attack
Tanah Bidang – Floor Sectoring. Teaches relative positioning of lower body to opponents lower body and possible counter attacks available.
Tanaga Dalam = Inner Force. Can be thought of a persons will but other mystical ideas are also attached to this term. Similar in idea to Chi or Ki.
Tangan = arm/hand.
Tangkap - To catch the opponents punch and use it as a handle to throw, or to lock/break the joint.
Tangkis - Block. Actually a misnomer as it is an interception strike which is designed to render the attacking limb useless, either by jamming or more frequently by striking the attacking limb.
Tangkis Garis - A blocking cut to attacking limb to disable it.
Tapak = Palm.
Tapak Hidup - Lock where pesilat can counter before lock is finished.
Tata Krama – To be polite or correct etiquette (see Adat)
Tata Susila – Ethics
Teguh – Firm. To be firm and to have discipline in your training/teaching. This would primarily be self-discipline, not enforced discipline.
